Kalanchoe pinnata – care and uses

Flowers have always been a beautiful element of home décor. But some potted plants go beyond looks, offering practical uses in the kitchen or even medicine. One such plant is the popular Kalanchoe pinnata (known in Poland as żyworódka pierzasta), valued as a natural remedy for many health issues.

In pharmacology it’s more often referred to as Kalanchoe daigremontiana. Our florists point out that it’s rich in vitamin C as well as micro- and macroelements like iron, silicon, calcium, copper, selenium, potassium, and aluminum. Thanks to this, it’s considered a medicinal plant with antifungal and antibacterial properties. It’s also known for its regenerative, anti-inflammatory, and immune-boosting effects.

Caring for Kalanchoe pinnata

If you plan to grow this plant for later consumption, you must only use natural fertilizers such as compost or worm castings. Chemical fertilizers make the plant unsuitable for medicinal use. The good news? This plant doesn’t require much care – it thrives in warm, sunny spots.

It’s also forgiving for those who forget to water regularly – it can survive a week without watering. However, once it grows too large, it may lose its charm, so it’s best not to let it become overgrown.

Uses of Kalanchoe pinnata

Because of its wide range of applications, this plant is one of the most commonly used in natural medicine. Its antifungal and antibacterial properties make it perfect for preparing home remedies.

⚠️ Important: the leaves should never come into contact with metal, as this causes them to lose their healing properties. Always detach them with your fingers and crush them with wooden tools.

Kalanchoe juice

This juice is often used as a base for homemade remedies, so it’s good to prepare it in advance. Cut the green stems with leaves, wash them, wrap them in paper, and keep them in the fridge for about a week. Then crush the stems and squeeze out the juice. To extend its shelf life, add a bit of alcohol.

Kalanchoe ointment

To make a simple ointment, you’ll need lard and kalanchoe juice. Melt about 10 g of lard, let it cool slightly, and then mix with one tablespoon of strained juice. Let the ointment set. This homemade remedy can be applied to various skin conditions – but never on open wounds.

Kalanchoe pinnata is particularly remarkable – it can help with a runny nose, cough, skin problems, sore feet, and much more. It is believed that thanks to their natural properties, can support us in fighting colds and other ailments.
