When and how to plant hyacinths? How to care for hyacinths at home? How to water hyacinths? Here are our tips.
Hyacinths, alongside daffodils, are among the most beautiful spring flowers. Although you can easily find them in any florist, today we’d like to encourage you to try the increasingly popular DIY trend – plant hyacinths at home yourself. Some of you may be smiling skeptically, others sighing in disbelief, but trust us – it’s easier than you think.
The best time to plant hyacinths is around September and October. Planting them then will let you enjoy blooming hyacinths in January or February, just when they appear in shops. Start with choosing the best bulbs – healthy, undamaged, and about the size of a small tangerine.
Place the bulbs in a dark, cool spot where the temperature stays between 6–10°C. For most of us, a cellar or storage room with good humidity will be ideal. After some time, you should notice small white roots forming. That’s the sign that the bulbs are ready to be planted.
So, what’s the best container for hyacinths? Luckily, there are no strict rules – good news for those who see flowers mainly as decoration. Hyacinths look beautiful in single pots with just one bulb, as well as in long balcony planters that can hold up to 10 bulbs depending on their size. For trend lovers, we recommend thick glass vessels filled with water – a stylish and modern touch.
When the long-awaited moment comes and your hyacinths bloom, place them in a sunny spot. Be careful, however, that the temperature doesn’t exceed 20–23°C. After the flowers fade and you want to replant the bulbs, remove all the dry parts. Wait until every above-soil part has dried completely. Then store the bulbs in a dark, cool place until the autumn planting season.
