Looking for ideas to decorate your home for the upcoming Christmas season? How about creating an elegant holiday centerpiece made with fresh plants and moss? Such a handmade arrangement will beautifully decorate your table, sideboard, or windowsill. A DIY Christmas centerpiece also makes a wonderful holiday gift — for example, for the hosts of Christmas Eve dinner.
So, how do you make a Christmas centerpiece using live potted plants? Which plants should you choose, and what should you keep in mind? Crafting your own holiday arrangement in a vessel isn’t difficult, but it is incredibly rewarding. Here are some simple step-by-step instructions on how to make a red Christmas centerpiece with fresh flowers and festive decorations.
Start by choosing a container — this could be a large decorative plate, a shallow pot, or another vessel. You’ll also need potting soil, moss to cover the soil, plants (we chose a small fir tree, a red poinsettia, ivy, houseleek, and kalanchoe), as well as Christmas decorations. Natural accents like pinecones and cinnamon sticks will work beautifully.
Start by placing a few centimeters of soil at the bottom of your pot or container. Make sure there’s enough soil so that the plants stand firmly.
Before you begin arranging, think about where you plan to display your centerpiece. If it will be the centerpiece of your Christmas Eve or holiday table, arrange it so that it looks elegant from every angle. If it’s meant for a windowsill or sideboard, you can focus the arrangement on just one side.
Arrange your chosen plants in the soil to create a full and elegant centerpiece. For the best effect, combine plants of different sizes and shapes — for example, one tall plant, one shorter one, and a few trailing or spreading plants that extend beyond the edge of the container.
Once you’re happy with the placement of the plants and the overall base of your arrangement, it’s time to cover the soil with moss. Gently place the moss in the spaces between the plants, neatly concealing the soil. This finishing touch will make your centerpiece look much more polished and festive on the Christmas table.
Give your centerpiece its final look by adding ornaments, pinecones, and other decorative accents of your choice.
Congratulations! It will make a perfect decoration for the table as well as a thoughtful gift for Christmas Eve.
This arrangement also looks stunning in a snowy-white version. In this case, the red poinsettia and kalanchoe are replaced with their white varieties. Which version of the centerpiece do you like more?
