What is a Polish "parapetówka"?

A "parapetówka" is an informal name for a housewarming party – a small gathering or bigger celebration hosted by people who have just moved into a new apartment or house. It usually takes place shortly after the move, to celebrate the new home, get to know the neighbors, or simply show friends and family the new space and neighborhood.

Why is the origin of the Polish word “parapetówka”?

“Parapetówka” comes straight from the Polish word "parapet", meaning windowsill.

Traditionally, when someone moved into a new apartment, they often didn’t have much furniture yet — but there was always a windowsill. Guests would set down food, drinks, or even sit around the parapet during the housewarming gathering. Over time, this habit gave the party its name.

Housewarming party or not, moving into a new home is a joyful and important moment in the lives of our loved ones – one that’s always worth celebrating with warm wishes.
