In Poland, anemones are commonly known as zawilec. 

The etymology of zawilec is uncertain. 

No etymological dictionary formally records its origin — it was most likely coined within the Polish language itself, rather than adapted from Latin like in most other European languages (English anemone, German Anemone, Russian anemon).

There are two main hypotheses from Polish linguists:

The first links zawilec to the verb wić się — meaning to wind or coil — suggesting the plant "winds" or "weaves" along the ground, forming carpet-like clusters in forests. The second connects it to the root vil- present in the word wilgoć (moisture), as the flowers appear in early spring on damp ground after snowmelt.

A third theory: the Polish word zawilec comes from the old participle zawiły, which is genetically and semantically linked to both the verbs zawinąć/zawijać (to wrap/wind) and zawiać/zawiewać (to blow/gust of wind). So interestingly, both the Greek anemone and the Polish zawilec may independently reference wind — just from completely different linguistic roots.

Anemones can be planted in either autumn or early spring, depending on the desired bloom time and your climate. For the best results: 

• In mild climates, plant in autumn to allow the tubers to establish before winter for spring blooms. 

• In colder climates, plant in early spring after the danger of frost has passed for summer blooms. 

Before planting, soak the tubers in water for 3-4 hours to promote quicker germination. 

Anemones are graceful flowers with a wide range of colours, including white, pink, purple, red, and blue. They have delicate, cup-shaped blooms with a dark, central eye surrounded by contrasting thin petals. The flowers typically grow on slender stems above finely divided, fern-like foliage, making them a popular choice for delicate, breezy floral arrangements. 

The flowering time depends on the variety and planting season. 

• Spring-Flowering Anemones: Such as Anemone blanda and Anemone coronaria, bloom from March to May. 

• Summer to Early Autumn Varieties: Japanese anemones (Anemone hupehensis) and others bloom from July to September, adding vibrant colours to late-season gardens. 

Anemones are gaining popularity in Poland, but they are not as widely available as roses, gerberas, or chrysanthemums. They are particularly sought after for weddings, boho-style arrangements, and romantic bouquets, where their striking dark centre and silky petals create a dramatic, elegant effect. The most popular varieties in Polish florists are Anemone coronaria in white, burgundy, and deep purple.

Cut anemones are not stocked by every Polish florist year-round, it is worth ordering them in advance, especially for weddings, events, or specific occasions.
