Polish funeral compositions – what kind of compositions are there? How do they differ?
Funeral floristry is the area of floristry dedicated to making floral decorations for funerals. The goal is to create a respectful atmosphere for saying farewell to the deceased. In Poland, these arrangements often include sashes with dedications from family or friends.
Besides creating the flowers, florists usually deliver them directly to the funeral site. Funeral floristry is an important part of both national and international flower delivery services, including at our flower shop.
A wieniec is a large circular or oval arrangement of flowers, often placed on a stand. In Poland, it is the most traditional funeral tribute, symbolizing eternity and remembrance. Wreaths can also be heart-shaped or smaller wianki (garlands).
A wiązanka is a hand-tied or arranged spray of flowers, usually elongated in shape. These are laid directly on the grave or coffin. Unlike a wreath, they are not circular but more bouquet-like.
In Poland, the word bukiet simply means “bouquet.” In the context of funerals ( Bukiety dla żałobników / bukiety funeralne / bukiety pogrzebowe), it refers to a smaller, hand-tied floral arrangement that is usually brought by relatives, friends, or colleagues of the deceased. Unlike a large wieniec (wreath) or wiązanka (spray), a funeral bouquet is more modest and practical to carry, but still expresses respect, sympathy, and remembrance.
The stroik is unique among Polish funeral compositions because it is the only one where artificial flowers are commonly used. While wreaths (wieńce), sprays (wiązanki), and bouquets (bukiety) are traditionally made exclusively with fresh, cut flowers, a stroik can be created from a mix of greenery, dried elements, and artificial blooms. This makes it more durable and long-lasting, which is why stroiki are often placed on graves not only during funerals but also throughout the year, especially on occasions like All Saints’ Day. Thanks to their resilience, stroiki remain a popular choice for families who want a lasting tribute that continues to decorate and honor the grave long after fresh flowers have faded.
